Kate Ryan soprano
Freshman | Musical Theatre
Hey y'all. My name is Kate Ryan. I'm a freshman Musical Theatre major hailing from Millville, Massachusetts. This is my second semester in Shades, and I think everyone is weird. Apart from singing and stuff, I like jazz music, movies, and books. I love my parents, Crew '15, and most importantly, the B.O.B.'s.

Lorraine Schule alto
Senior | Business Marketing
Lorraine is in her last year at Penn State, and she's not too happy about it. But, it's okay because she spent all four years with her Zeta Tau Alpha sorority sisters, and of course, Shades friends. She is graduating with a B.S. in Marketing from the Smeal College of Business and an International Business minor. Starting in June she will be a financial analyst for Citigroup in New York, and she's pretty terrified at the idea of that. So, for the next two months, Lorraine will be #YOLOing quite a bit. This includes crossing off her extensive bucket list, raging, and living at her beach house at the Jersey Shore. The things she will miss most about her Happy Valley experience are the fun GenEd classes she took, daylongs, Zetas, Shadsey Shades, chanting WE ARE at tour groups, Heister loves, football tailgates, and my precious B.O.B.s.

Mark Lehnowsky; B.S. Economics '08; J.D. '11; B.M. Music Composition '12; is the founder and long-time director of Shades of Blue. Although he has moved into his professional career, he remains in close contact with the group that he loves. Mark's music has been performed all across the country, including commercials aired on ESPN. Recently, Penn State's Glee Club performed a newly commissioned work, Everyone Burst Out Singing, in Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, and PMEA Region II Choir performed Bringers at Ridgway High School in Ridgway, PA. For three years he was the Assistant Director of Essence of Joy, under the direction of Dr. Anthony Leach. Essence of Joy recently performed Wade in the Water at the ACDA national convention in Chicago and premiered Deep River at their 2012 Spring Concert. Mark studied choral conducting under two-time Grammy Award winner Dr. Christopher Kiver, who performs Mark's music frequently. Mark is the winner of several International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella "Best Arrangement" Awards. In addition to writing vocal music, Mark has written two short (20 minute) film scores: Iowa is Closed Today, and Death after Life, and he has enjoyed those experiences immensely. Drew Bastian bass
Senior | Integrative Arts
Drew Bastian is a senior Integrative Arts major studying percussion and theatre. Recently he blogged on his livejournal "Excited to have just joined Shades of Blue! Is anyone reading this? Really? Does anyone even know this site still exists?" He has been actively singing since about 1998 when wild boy bands still roamed the Earth. When not drumming he can be found outside Bill Emhof's door crying out in unrequited love. He does not respond to the names Brew Dastian, Drewbag, D-Bizzle, or Pika-Drew and hopes no one ever finds out about these horrifying nicknames.
Jake Yarmoff bass
Sophomore | Finance
I may be a sophomore Finance major - but I love music. Because I have perfect pitch, I hear music everywhere I go- from cellphone beeps to car horns. It's not always pretty. For example, about fifteen seconds ago, I heard the ugliest sounding ambulance siren I've ever heard (there was a really off-sounding C# in there somewhere...). I have played guitar for twelve years, sang for ten, and participated in musical theater for five years. A couple of goals for my time in Shades include having had a musical impact on the group, and to have arranged some rockin' tunes. I have been a member of Shades just about two school years, and have had a great time with some of the most friendly and talented people I know.
Bill Emhof bass, percussion
Grad Student | Composition/Theory
William S. Emhof Jr. (1988) is a first year graduate student currently pursuing his M.M. in Music Composition/Theory at Penn State University where he received his B.M. in Composition as well. He has composed for a variety of mediums, most notably choral and electroacoustic works, though his primary focus is songwriting for the band Hustle the Nobles. This has been Bill's fourth year with Shades of Blue as the vocal percussionist, and his first year as the groups director, which he is super awesome at.
